An Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a cosmetic surgery that involves
removal of excess fat and skin from the lower abdomen, tightening
the skin from below the bikini line up to the ribcage. The muscles
in the middle are frequently brought back together, since they
are frequently pulled apart from pregnancy or weight gain.
Complete Abdominoplasty
A complete tummy tuck is usually recommended for patients with
a lot of excess skin. This is frequently seen after pregnancy
or massive weight loss. The tummy tuck involves removal of excess
fat and skin from the lower abdominal region, pulling the skin
tighter from the ribcage down to the bikini line. The muscles
in the middle of the abdomen are often tightened. This procedure
is usually done as an outpatient procedure, but each individual
is evaluated for the extent and appropriateness of the procedure.
Mini Abdominoplasty
A mini, or partial, abdominoplasty is for patients who have a
little excess skin just in the lower abdominal region. A smaller
incision is made below the bikini line, and the skin is tightened.
The muscles may or may not be pulled together and recovery may
be considerably less than a full abdominoplasty. This procedure
does not tighten the upper abdomen.
What complications can arise after a tummy tuck?
Wound healing is usually the biggest concern of people undergoing
a tummy tuck. Bleeding and infection are risks of any surgery;
they occur about 1% of the time with abdominoplasty. Fluid collection,
asymmetry and poor scarring are also risks. A patient can help
decrease these risks by being in good shape, not smoking, and
following the postoperative instructions.
How long does it take to recover from a tummy tuck?
One or 2 drains are placed during surgery to drain away excess
fluid after a tummy tuck, and it generally takes around one week
before the drains are removed. A patient can be back to work as
soon as they feel well and don’t require strong pain medication
during the day, so this will vary a lot depending on the type
of work and the patient’s pain tolerance. Most people are
back to work in about a week. Gentle exercise such as walking
can be started in about a week, but strenuous exercise is limited
for 6-8 weeks.
Is a tummy tuck covered by insurance?
This procedure is usually not covered by insurance, although
under unusual circumstances a portion of it may be. You will be
given costs for all the components of the surgery including the
anesthesia and OR charges.
Is a tummy tuck permanent?
A tummy tuck is permanent as long as a patient doesn’t
have a major weight gain or pregnancy afterwards. Maintaining
a good diet and exercising regularly will help maintain a good
body contour.
What about scarring?
The scars from a tummy tuck are low on the abdomen, so they are
usually hidden buy a bathing suit. A full abdominoplasty will
also leave a scar around the belly button which is usually not
very noticeable.
