Of all our body parts, there's probably nothing we keep an eye on more than our bellies. The flatter our stomachs, the more "in shape" we tend to feel. That desire for a taut and sleeker abdomen has driven the popularity of tummy tucks in Salem, Roanoke and Cave Spring, as well as other parts of Virginia.
When tummy tuck patients come into the Salem, VA, office of Dr. Carol A. Wray, they are usually frustrated by lax and protruding bellies that don't respond to diet and exercise. In fact, most of the men and women who undergo tummy tucks at The Center for Plastic Surgery at Ridgewood Hill are of normal body weight and proportion. Some of the main causes of a sagging stomach are aging, significant weight loss, heredity, pregnancy and prior surgery.
What is a tummy tuck?
Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the lower abdomen which tightens the skin from the rib cage to below the bikini line. The muscles in the middle are often brought back together because they are frequently pulled apart from pregnancy or weight gain.
What is a complete abdominoplasty?
A complete tummy tuck is usually recommended for patients with a lot of excess skin, frequently seen after pregnancy or massive weight loss. This procedure involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the lower abdominal region and then pulling the skin tighter from the ribcage down to the bikini line. The muscles in the middle of the abdomen are often tightened as well. For our patients in Salem, Roanoke and Cave Spring and beyond, a tummy tuck is generally done as an outpatient procedure.
What is a mini abdominoplasty?
A mini, or partial, tummy tuck is for patients who have a little excess skin just in the lower abdominal region. A smaller incision is made below the bikini line, and the skin is tightened. The muscles may or may not be pulled together, and recovery may be considerably less than a full tummy tuck. This procedure does not tighten the upper abdomen.
What complications can arise after a tummy tuck?
Our team of tummy tuck professionals in Salem have found that wound healing is one of the biggest concerns for our patients. Bleeding and infection are risks of any surgery, and they occur about 1 percent of the time with abdominoplasty. Fluid collection, asymmetry and poor scarring are also risks. A patient can help decrease these complications by being in good shape, not smoking and following Dr. Wray's postoperative instructions.
Our comprehensive care and compassionate demeanor continue to attract tummy tuck patients from near and far, including men and women who hail from Salem, Roanoke and Cave Spring. They have chosen Dr. Wray and the staff at The Center for Plastic Surgery at Ridgewood Hill because they know we are dedicated to making their tummy tuck recovery as comfortable as possible.
How long does it take to recover from a tummy tuck?
One or two drains are placed during surgery to remove excess fluid after a tummy tuck and it generally takes around 1-2 weeks before the drains are taken out. Patients can be back to work as soon as they feel well and don’t require strong pain medication during the day. Most people return to work in about a week. Gentle exercise, such as walking, can be started in about a week, but strenuous exercise is limited for six to eight weeks following abdominoplasty.
Is a tummy tuck covered by insurance?
This procedure is usually not covered by insurance, although under unusual circumstances a portion of it may be. You will be given costs for all the components of your tummy tuck, including the anesthesia and operating room charges.
A tummy tuck is relatively permanent as long as a patient doesn’t have major weight gain or a pregnancy afterwards. Maintaining a good diet and exercising regularly will help maintain a good body contour.
What about tummy tuck scarring?
The scars from a tummy tuck are low on the abdomen, so they are usually hidden by a bathing suit. A full abdominoplasty will also leave a scar around the belly button, which is usually not very noticeable.
