Elegantly Enhance Your Skin’s Appearance
with Age & Sun Spot Removal
Visible brown spots that appear on the surface of the skin are
known as sunspots, age spots, liver spots, and the ever so common,
freckles. "Age spots" or "liver spots" are
flat, brown areas called lentigines. These spots are caused by
the sun and usually appear on the face, hands, chest and back.
Commercial creams such as "fade creams" can sometimes
lighten them, and frequently using a quality skin care regimen
and prescription creams will more effectively fade these spots.
A more permanent treatment uses broad band light (multiple wave
lengths) to actually break up the pigment cells and remove them;
and laser (single wavelength) treatments can be very effective
for single lesions.
Studies have shown that most pigmented type lesions can be directly
attributed to overexposure to the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays.
Preventative measures should always be taken by using sunscreen
and avoiding the sun when possible. Although these preventative
measures won't correct any damage already done, it will help keep
pigment problems from getting any worse.
How Are Pigmented Age & Sun Spots Removed?
There are a few different treatments available to reduce unwanted
age and sun spots. The type of age/sun spot will determine the
best method for removing it. The professionals at The Center for
Plastic Surgery at Ridgewood Hill and the Medispa at Ridgewood
Hill can help determine which method is right for you and your
skin type. The following are general methods used in removing
age and sun spots:
Laser Removal:
Individual sunspots, age spots and freckles respond
very well to newly advanced laser treatments. Safe and effective
laser light is absorbed by the darkened pigment, there by lightening
or destroying it, leaving the skin looking more uniform in color,
texture and appearance. A majority of patients tolerate the treatment
easily, describing it feeling like a snap of a rubber band. After
the laser treatment, the treated area may feel like a slight sunburn.
Within 1 to 24 hours, discomfort disappears and results are seen
within 2 - 30 days post-treatment. Results may vary depending
on the spot treated.
Broad Band Light (BBL):
When sun damage or visible pigmentation is more widespread, a
series of Broad Band Light treatments may be highly recommended.
This non-invasive, "lunch time" approach helps break
up the pigment cells, and over a period of 3-4 weeks the spots
will usually lessen or disappear. The treatment may be essentially
painless, or can give you a feeling of a sun burn for a few hours
depending on the intensity of the pigmented lesions. BBL can also
be used to reduce facial flushing, visable capillaries and increase
your skin's own natural collagen production which in time will
help to improve fine lines and wrinkles in troubled areas.
