Liposuction is a surgical technique that is designed to improve
the body’s natural contours by removing excess fat from
localized areas between the skin and muscle. Very small access
sites are used, so scarring is minimal. ‘Lipo’ stands
for fat, and liposuction is the process of ‘suctioning out’
the undesired fat.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
The best candidate is someone that is at their ideal body weight,
but has localized bulges that they wish contoured. Liposuction
is not for weight reduction, and obese patients may not be candidates
for this procedure. Usually anyone with a lot of excess skin will
not be a good liposuction candidate, since this procedure does
not remove skin, only fat. Skin reduction procedures may be more
appropriate if there is an excess of skin.
How is liposuction performed?
There are several different techniques, but the one Dr. Wray
most often uses is tumescent liposuction, which is probably the
gold standard with which other techniques are compared. This is
done by instilling a saline solution containing an anesthetic
and medication to lessen bleeding into the area to be suctioned
in order to help loosen the fat cells, and then suctioning the
area with various sized cannulas to achieve better contouring.
The suctioning is done through very small puncture areas that
are strategically placed to hide the small scars.
How does liposuction work?
By suctioning out small tunnels of fat in the desired areas,
a honeycomb effect is created. By applying compression, the honeycombed
areas collapse. The skin will re-contour to an extent in response
to the underlying changes in the fat, resulting in a new contour.
When can I return to work?
Because liposuction creates very small incisions, and does not
involve the muscles, most people experience very little down time
when it comes to normal activities. More vigorous activities may
be postponed for a week or so, but it is usually up to the patients
comfort level after the first week. Most people are able to return
to work within a few days.
Are the results of liposuction permanent?
The fat that is removed will rarely return in the same proportions,
but if the patient does not maintain a good diet and exercise
program, fat will certainly increase in all areas of the body,
including those that are liposuctioned.
How much weight will be lost with liposuction?
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and the amount of
weight lost will be minimal. Liposuction is better described as
“spot reducing”; eliminating specific bulges rather
than an overall weight reduction.
Is liposuction a good treatment for obesity?
No, liposuction is usually not a treatment for an obese patient,
since it is not going to give an overall reduction of body fat.
It does not address any of the excess fat that is inside the abdominal
cavity (a “beer belly”), and can become dangerous
if too much fat is removed at one time.
What are alternatives to liposuction?
Liposuction is best for localized excess fat deposits without
overlying loose skin. Sometimes a direct excision of the excess
skin and fat is a better choice, if there is a lot of loose skin
as well as fat. Successful dieting will always result in loss
of fat, but it is more generalized and cannot spot reduce.
