Light of this wavelength is able to penetrate deeply enough into the skin to be able to reach the hair root. Each pulse lasts for only several thousandths of a second, so the energy from the beam is almost completely absorbed by the hair bulb. The hair in the treated follicle is shed over a period of weeks and the remnants of the root are reabsorbed by the body.

The Cynosure's Apogee Elite Laser uses a wide beam which enables it to treat many hairs with each pulse of the laser. This is a distinct advantage over older methods of hair removal, such as electrolysis, and it makes it possible to treat larger body areas, such as the arms, legs, back and abdomen, in a single session.
