A breast lift (mastopexy) lifts firm sagging breasts and improves
their overall shape. Various factors like age, weight loss, pregnancy
and the earth’s gravity cause breasts to sag. A breast lift
is a surgical procedure that is designed to remove excess skin,
improve the shape of sagging breasts and position the nipple to
its original position.
Who is a candidate for a breast lift?
A healthy individual who has sagging breasts can consider undergoing
a breast lift. Ideally the patient should be at her ideal weight.
What is the difference between a breast lift and breast augmentation?
A breast lift does not add to the volume of breasts and is performed
to improve the firmness and shape of sagging breasts. On the other
hand, breast augmentation is performed to improve the overall
size and shape of the breasts. There are usually more scars associated
with a breast lift. It is also possible that Dr Wray would carry
out both a breast lift and breast augmentation at the same time,
to help with the volume and the sagginess.
Which breast lift procedure is the best?
There is no universally accepted technique for performing a breast
lift. Dr Wray will discuss the various options available to a
patient before deciding on a single procedure. The amount of lift
and shaping needed will help determine which type of lift is best
suited for the patient.
What is a breast lift consultation like?
The patient will discuss with Dr Wray the problems she has as
well as her expectations. The breasts are examined, evaluating
the amount of sagging, the elasticity of the skin, and the overall
amount of tissue. Options for treatment are then discussed thoroughly
with the patient.
What can be expected after a breast lift?
The surgery is performed in an accredited ambulatory surgery
center as an outpatient procedure. The patient is usually in a
wrap dressing for a few days followed by a support bra for 3 months.
Sutures are usually all underneath the skin, so there won’t
be any extra suture marks.
How long does it take to recover from a breast lift?
After surgery the breasts will be quite firm, and will need time
to soften and settle.
Depending on the type of work, patients can usually return to
work in 3-4 days. Active exercise that involves bouncing is limited
for a month.
What are some possible risks of a breast lift?
Excessive bleeding or infection are always a possibility, but
are rare. As the breasts settle, there may be some asymmetry,
or difference from side to side. There can be a change or loss
of sensation in the nipple or breast, which can be permanent.
One of the trade offs in having the breasts lifted is the presence
of scars, and even with the best of care they may end up being
wide or very noticeable.
Is a breast lift painful?
Patients do experience some discomfort and soreness after a breast
lift, but it is usually not severe. Dr Wray will prescribe pain
medicine for use after a breast lift and this should help alleviate
the pain. Ice packs are also helpful during the first few days.
What about scarring?
Like any surgical procedure, the extent of scarring is subject
to an individual’s healing patterns. There are various breast
lift procedures a surgeon can offer and the amount of scarring
is dependent on the type of procedure used. The patient is instructed
to massage the scars once they are healed to help them remain
soft and flat. Over time they will fade out, but they will always
be present.
How long does a breast lift last?
No breast lift surgery is permanent. Breasts are subject to gravity
and aging and therefore there isn’t any surgery that can
offer a permanent solution. Some of the factors affecting the
longevity of the lift include the weight of the breasts, the support
it has, the elasticity of the skin and the activity of the patient.
What can I do to ensure lasting results?
Unfortunately there are no muscles in the breasts, so exercise
will not help keep them well shaped and lifted. Wearing good support
while exercising is helpful, especially while the scars are still
forming and are weaker.
