What is a breast lift?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, firms sagging breasts and improves their overall shape. Various factors - such as age, weight loss, pregnancy and the earth’s gravity -- cause breasts to droop. In Virginia and throughout the United States, a breast lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin, improve the shape of breasts and position the nipple to its original position.
Who is a candidate for a breast lift?
A healthy individual who has sagging breasts can consider undergoing a breast lift. Typically, the patient should be at her ideal weight. When you meet with Dr. Wray, she will perform a comprehensive evaluation to make sure a mastopexy is right for you.
What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast augmentation?
A breast lift does not add to the volume of breasts and is performed to improve the firmness and shape of sagging breasts. On the other hand, breast augmentation enhances the overall size and shape of your bust line. There are usually more scars associated with a breast lift. Sometimes the procedures are done together to give a patient both better shape and more volume, but if the breast is very long or heavy, the procedures may need to be done separately.
Which breast lift surgery is the best?
There is no one universally accepted technique for performing a breast lift. In our Salem office, Dr. Wray will discuss the various options available before helping you decide on a single procedure. The amount of lift and shaping needed will help determine which type of lift is best suited for you.
What is a breast lift consultation like?
During your breast lift consultation in Salem, Dr. Wray will listen carefully to your concerns, as well as your expectations. Your breasts will be examined, and Dr. Wray will evaluate the amount of sagging, the elasticity of your skin and the overall amount of tissue. She will then thoroughly discuss your mastopexy options with you.
When you meet with Dr. Wray, you can count on her to treat you as an individual, not just another breast lift patient. She has worked with various women in and around Salem, Roanoke and Cave Spring, and the surrounding regions, helping them attain the perkier, shapelier breasts they desire.
What can I expect after a breast lift?
As a breast lift patient at our Salem office, your operation will be performed in an accredited ambulatory surgery center on an outpatient basis. After the procedure, you will usually be in a wrap dressing for a few days and then a support bra for three months. Sutures are generally underneath the skin, so there won’t be any extra marks.
How long does it take to recover from a breast lift?
After surgery your breasts will be quite firm and will need time to soften and settle.
Most breast lift patients can return to work in three to four days. However, active exercise that involves bouncing will be limited for a month.
What are some possible risks of a breast lift?
Excessive bleeding and infection are always a possibility with a breast lift, but they are rare. As the breasts settle, there may be some asymmetry, or difference, from side to side. There can be a change or loss of sensation in the nipple or breast, which can be permanent. One of the side effects to having the breasts lifted is scarring, and even with the best of care, these marks may end up being wide or very noticeable.
Is a breast lift painful?
Patients who undergo a breast lift do experience some discomfort and soreness, but it is usually not severe. Dr. Wray will prescribe medicine to help alleviate the pain. Ice packs are also helpful during the first few days.
What about scarring?
Like any surgical procedure, the extent of scarring is subject to an individual’s healing patterns. There are several breast lift techniques, which can yield varying levels of scarring. You will be instructed to massage the scars once they are healed to help them remain soft and flat. Over time, they will fade out, but they will always be present.
How long does a breast lift last?
No breast lift is permanent. Breasts are subject to gravity and aging; therefore, there isn’t any surgery that can offer forever results. Some of the factors affecting the longevity of a breast lift include the weight and support of the breasts, the elasticity of the skin and the activity of the patient.
What can I do to ensure lasting results?
Unfortunately, there are no muscles in the breasts, so exercise will not help keep them well shaped and lifted. However, wearing good support while exercising is helpful, especially while the breast lift scars are still forming and are weaker.
