What is BOTOX® and how does it work?
BOTOX® is a purified protein designed to diminish the muscle movement that causes wrinkles to form as you age, giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. When BOTOX® is injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles, it blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to these muscles, reducing the activity that creates persistent lines. You can also undergo BOTOX® in Salem to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the underarms, palms and feet.
Are BOTOX® injections suitable for everyone?
The professionals at The Center for Plastic Surgery at Ridgewood Hill screen all our patients carefully to ensure safe and effective BOTOX® treatments. Typically, the men and women who undergo BOTOX® with us in Salem are between the ages of 18 and 65. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to postpone this procedure until their infants are no longer dependant on them for nutrition. BOTOX® is also not be used when there are signs of infection at the proposed injection site or in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neuromuscular disorders, such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, may be at increased risk of serious side effects.
What can I expect from a BOTOX® procedure?
As mentioned above, the treatment generally takes about 10 minutes. Dr. Carol Wray will use a very thin needle to inject the target areas. The solution will then relax the muscles that are initiating the lines and wrinkles in your skin. The effects of BOTOX® may be seen as soon as three days following your treatment, but the most significant results will be visible in 10 to 14 days. Because it is a temporary treatment that lasts about three months, you will need follow-up injections to maintain your new, youthful look.
Are BOTOX® injections painful?
There is a very small degree of discomfort associated with BOTOX®. The "pain" is comparable to being pricked by a pin. We will usually ice the area to make it even less noticeable and to help prevent bruising from the needle stick.
