Arm Lift Surgery
Have you ever raised your arms in celebration? Or stretched them wide for a hug? These are movements most of us use on a regular basis. For many people in Virginia and throughout the United States, these seemingly simple gestures can be a source of embarrassment because of sagging underarm skin. You may be a candidate for arm lift procedure also known as brachioplasty. A consultation with Dr. Carol Wray will determine if you are a candidate for arm lift surgery. For more than 20 years, Dr. Wray's skills and experience as a board certified plastic surgeon have drawn patients from across Roanoke Valley, including residents of Salem, Roanoke and Cave Spring.
What is an arm lift?
Also known as Brachioplasty, an arm lift is a surgical procedure that reshapes the underside of your upper arms from your underarm to your elbow. Dr. Wray performs arm lifts to reduce excess skin, remove fat and tighten the appearance of your arm.
Who is a candidate for an arm lift?
There are many reasons our patients in Salem choose an arm lift. Many of them are fighting the loss of elasticity in their skin. This causes the loose and flabby look that develops under our arms. Sometimes, substantial weight loss can leave men and women with excess skin that cannot be improved by diet and exercise alone.
What is an arm lift consultation like?
Your Brachioplasty consultation in our Salem office will include a thorough physical examination, as well as a discussion of your concerns and goals for the procedure. Dr. Wray and her caring staff are dedicated to making sure that all our patients - whether they hail from Salem, Roanoke, Cave Spring or further afield - understand how the arm lift surgical procedure works and are ultimately comfortable with their decision about the surgery.
What can I expect after an arm lift?
When you undergo an arm lift, the smoother, tighter contours of your arms will be noticeable almost immediately. Bandages or dressings may be applied to your incisions, and your arms may also be wrapped in a compression garment to reduce swelling.
How long does it take to recover after an arm lift?
Once you have completed your Brachioplasty, you will probably be able to return to work after about two weeks. For more strenuous activity, such as exercising at the gym, you should wait about four to six weeks.
What are some possible risks of an arm lift?
As with any surgery, there can be infection associated with an arm lift. Bleeding and fluid accumulation are other possible side effects. You can trust that Dr. Wray and her medical team will keep a close eye on you during your healing process. We will schedule follow-up visits in Salem to make sure your arm lift recovery is progressing as it should.
Is an arm lift painful?
Common after-effects from an arm lift include bruising and swelling, all of which usually disappear in about a month. You may experience some numbness for a few months.
What about scarring from an arm lift?
Like most surgeries, the length and pattern of your arm lift incision will depend on the amount and location of the excess skin that is being removed. Incisions are generally made on the inside of your arm, and they will leave a permanent, visible scar.
How long does an arm lift last?
Typically, a brachioplasty will yield long-lasting results. If you maintain a stable weight and keep active, the effects of your arm lift should be relatively permanent.
